Gates for your stairs need not be unsightly. Today's
baby gates made of plastic can gradually wear away your drywall or
wallpaper, and become loose and unstable over time.
Urban Revivals can build a stair gate that works with style of your stairs. For example, in these pictures, the original
handrail (c. 1896) and balusters (vertical elements) are on the left (View
the whole project!).
The gate is made of balusters that match the style, and the gate is
latched onto the original newel post on the left. We built a half-post,
shown on the right, similar in style, and the gate is mounted on that
post.

When you no longer want a baby
gate, it is easy to remove. After removal of the gate and latch, simply
fill the small screw holes with colored wood putty, and touch up the
filled holes with varnish. We can build gates from new components or
antique salvage. We highly recommend controlling costs by using new
handrail and balusters, but using salvage for the larger posts, as
needed to match the styles in your home.
