BUILDING A BUDGET DESK AND WORK AREA

FOR A 1905 MACKINTOSH-STYLE ROOM

Desk Project - Afterwards

Budget Project During Effort showing assorted small pieces of furniture

Trimwork Designed and
Installed by Urban Revivals

Mackintosh Details in the RoomEver  had several pieces of home office or bedroom furniture, or odd shelving, that you'd like to reuse? Integrating odd pieces around your home, using creative trimwork, can really save dollars.

Odd furniture pieces in this room were combined into a desk work area. The design was intended to be complementary to the floor and walls. The room features squares as part of its 1905 Mackintosh style  (moldings and trim hand-crafted by Urban Revivals) and pastel-tinted concrete flooring.

We had 2 small shelf units, a file cabinet, desk hutch, long table, and old desk that required integration into a "U" shaped desk work area. The total cost for materials to assemble a modern work area was $170. Simple materials, available from your local hardware store, were used. We decided to use gardener's vinyl lattice, in a subdued sage green, as a feature element. It matched the sage green of the floor. Stain colors were adjusted between pieces to match. Because of the existing finish on the oak furniture, we elected to keep them a medium brown, as opposed to staining them dark walnut. The effect remains pleasing.
