Original 1880's Buffet

|
This delightful buffet was easily identifiable as a piece from the
1880's because of its rococo design and English thistle pattern. The
piece, while beautifully finished, was in a color scheme not conducive
to the homeowner's new home. In addition, the piece was rubbed with a
charcoal glaze over pale blue, but was missing some of the whimsy
associated with such a Victorian piece.
In this project, we restored the piece to a pale yellow with mustard
glaze, with deep olive rubbed into the decorative thistle and vine
patterns. To top off this beautiful piece, we gilded the shell on top,
and wiped it with a varnish, to which metallic leaf powder was added.

The
customer was prompted for her color selections, which were taken from a
carpet located near the buffet.
Urban Revivals created 12 different samples for her, reflecting
different base colors, color glazes, and deep wiping colors for the
engravings in this piece.

The
work was performed with the customer's sample placed carefully on the
buffet. After priming, the base yellow coat was applied, followed by two
wipes of mustard glaze, and deep olive glaze in the details.
