TILE RESTORATION - GREEK REVIVAL LOBBY circa 1916

This building has a 750 sq. ft lobby, located in downtown Washington D.C. The building dates from 1916, and features Greco-Roman styling throughout the lobby. It possesses very interesting features such as marble baseboard and wainscoting, large decorative corbels, wall moldings, sconces, and a beautiful ceiling medallion. The tiles are similar to those manufactured by Maw & Company, in great volume, during that period. The tiles are quarry tiles in 1" hex shapes, as well as 3/4 inch mosaics in a Greek key border.

The restoration effort consisted of selectively smoothing portions of the worn tile (so as not to collect water during subsequent cleanings), as well as restoration of the grout and mortar bed, filling of chips, repair of cracks, removal of grime and stains, lifting of adhesions, and sealing with an impregnator.
