WOOD
GRAINING
Urban
Revivals can imitate the beautiful, random patterns inherent in wood
grains, as shown on this inexpensive "Home Depot" white
cabinet door (at left), and on a simple painted pine post, as shown at
right. These techniques were considered very cosmopolitan in the
19th century, and can still instantly transform dull walls, doors,
cabinets, and columns today.
Wood grains are created by applying alkyd primers (if
required), base coat, glazes, and lacquer or varnish finishes. Glazes
are applied with brushes, rockers, sable liners, and specialty wood
combs and fleckers. Many grains (see
chart) can be closely approached by faux
finish. Before any project, you will be provided with a
sample of the end result, in order to fine tune your preferences,
colors, and finish. The post, shown at right, is a
sample piece created for a client renovating the posts in
her interior stairwell (see the whole
job).
Glazed finishes are ideal for bedrooms and hallways
featuring medieval, Anglo-Japanese, or Gothic furnishings.
Metallic glazes may also be used to create antique
finishes for cabinetry. Contact us for more
information.
