HEARTH TILE REPAIR
AND RESTORATION
Historic
hearth tile adds both beauty and value to your
home. Old tiles may be impossible to replace, and add tremendously to
your home's resale value. Many older homes also contain the typical
Victorian design, in which the hearth tiles are accompanied by a splayed
design of five tiles surrounding the fireplace. These tiles are housed
within a decorative grate. With these decorative grate tiles,
Urban Revivals can clean tiles, remove paint and old plaster, glue
breaks, and patch chipped edges.
Should
your tiles simply have chips or missing color spots, Urban Revivals can
repair these areas using epoxy compounds and enamel colors. Old hearth
tiles are not normally grouted. We will carefully lift these tiles out
for repair. Old cement will be carefully removed to make room for new
ceramic tile adhesive, in order to position and secure the repaired
tile.
For chipped tiles, we will repair the tiles with an
epoxy compound, color match the damaged areas, and reseat the tiles. For
tiles immediately adjoining the firebox, we may avoid this solution, but
pick historic replacement fire-rated tiles (as the epoxy repair
may darken over time if too near the firebox).
Should we encounter an inadequate hearth, we will
coordinate with our customers to ensure that the hearth meets fire code,
making any repairs with a marble cut slab and cement bed composed of
cement, lime and sand, with depth, front and side projections in
accordance with building code. Grate repairs, fitting of fireplaces, and
flue repairs will be referred to an alternate contractor.
